Hydraulic winch....?
So.... Anyone know of a cheap source of a hydraulic winch?
Just thinking whether to go hydraulic or electric really. Electric is easy as there's plenty, but may look more into hydraulic for consistency and no heat build up issues.

Yeah I've got loads of info from Chris in the past on the setup, just want to know if anyone has a cheap source. Mile marker seem to be well respected for hydraulic, but about a grand....

If you were going to use a winch for prolonged use every day then I would explore a hydraulic option.
For occasional and leisure use I feel electric is the way to go.
Mile maker is the most common winch used in the 4x4 arena, but by no means the only brand.
A hydraulic instalation also has it's problems. How are you going to power the winch. The hydraulic pump can be powered from the transfer box in some LR vehicles. In others the power steering pump is used. If the standard PS pump is used winch performance can be a bit slow, to say the least. One can go for an uprated pump, but then there is increased cost.
I have also seen the pump run from a chain on the crank shaft pulley, a dedicated secondary pump just for the winch. This will depend on what engine you are running and what spare space there is on front of the unit.
So let us assme that you have sorted the pump and the plumbing and the electrical circuits to control the plumbing, your next problem could be heat. Heat can build up in the oil and you may need either an oil cooler or a custom resevoir with enough capacity to allow for oil to cool as it circulates.
With a hydraulic winch if your engine is not running, not is your winch.

ISTR over on the other side that there was some-one in OZ that fabricated a bracket and ran a second PAS pump and fluid bottle close to the FBH side of the engine and therefore didn't mess with the existing steering set-up which is another preference of mine - remember direction of rotation is important as some pumps are CW and others are CCW if you go this way. I cant yet find the post but I think that they fitted a v-pulley either to the crank pulley or the fan pulley to drive the second pump.

I think I'd still favour a hydraulic winch, but in reality I think I'll end up buying a supawinch goldfish from peterborough. Perhaps we'd have it fitted before the end of the weekend
