Mark - is it visibly blocked?
Reason I ask is that what I can see of mine does look clean from the front. Is yours blocked in between the IC ?

Oh yes, I held it to the light, and can see nothing through it anywhere!JF Lux wrote:Mark - is it visibly blocked?

You can see light through the new one - but because of the depth (About twice as deep as the two radiators above sandwiched together) you have to look straight on to it.
The other way to prove that air can get through is to take all the top radiator cowl off, and poor water in the bottom - mine filled up about 2" deep as the cowl is a pretty tight fit. Though a better way is to do what I did to clean the radiators, is to get a 18" length of 15mm copper, terminate the end with a 90deg elbow and then a reducer to 8mm. You can then attach a hose and direct the water parallel to rad/IC. If the water goes through, its ok To check the IC, its easier with a second person to look through the grill/bottom plate.

Re: Removal of Intercooler for Cleaning
AF - reread my post.....
I said three hours to take mine OFF..... then you allow the same or less to get it back together.
So I reckon I was bob on!
Looking at the front doesn't really do much - mine looked OK but then I reckon the mud gets forced deeper and deeper in and just the front edge is washed clean by road spray etc.
Did you weight the new and old ones?
I did and my old one was over double the weight - but now I were you I would let the old one soak for a good while and keep it for the next clean up.

Re: Removal of Intercooler for Cleaning
SB, you're right - mind you, in my mind before I did it, I thought there can't be that much to do, so should be able to do it quicker.
I didn't weigh them to be honest - never gave it a thought - but I can weigh the old one obviously before I too dunk it in water for a few months. Only useful if you already know the weight - did you make a (mental) note?
I ache now. My right arm is really hurting from getting the cowl bolt out and back in again. As you said, its the worse bit of the job. Unfortunately I couldn't get a picture of me doing it - as I ran out of hands
Just going to start to write it up.

Re: Removal of Intercooler for Cleaning
Mark - if I read your post correctly (which i admit is difficult at the moment after some evening beverages...) then mine should be better than I think. I regularly give the radiator a flush, including as much of the IC as possible, by following MrH's original instructions over on disco3
But I think I still need to get the IC out to really make sure....

I wouldn't take it out just for a look! Its a lot of work
Unless you had plenty of time, I wouldn't even take it out, clean it and replace, because I don't think you would be able to clean it well enough quickly!

I did think about swapping it around (with rad), but that wouldn't work either.

Re: Removal of Intercooler for Cleaning
John - I'm in agreement with AF - don't take the IC out just for a look and a quick clean - because I've soaked mine for weeks and run it through twice with a low pressure hose and I'm still not convinced it's 100%.
For the price fit a new one and then give yourself time to try and clean the old.
AF - I seem to remember the clean weight was 6 or there abouts
