Re: Adjustable roof rail mounted work lights
A battery is too big just use a nice big flat solar panel to power the lights! Cuts down on cables, slim fit and won't effect mpg charging it. What's not to like!

Yeah that'll work Stu, nice bright lights during the day and darkness at night - shame you can't use a not gate to reverse it

Re: Adjustable roof rail mounted work lights
Mark you seem to think my plan is floored because the sun won't be out at night? Well I can tell you I've thought about that already.
I would mount the solar panel so that it catches some of the light from the lights (not so much that it blocks out the lights obviously) so that the solar panel is powered from the lights. Then you can use them day or night!
Simples!

Re: Adjustable roof rail mounted work lights
You planks!
OK, I've found some seriously nice bus bar systems, some of them adaptible to what I'm thinking of, many of them being more than the value of the car per meter.
So, being the old skinflint I am, I'm looking at alternatives.
I was thinking of using this kind of profile :
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/171763464788" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
and hot-gluing tinned copper wire in there. 16mm wire is 4.5mm wide so it'll fit inside nicely.
I can then mount it sideways like an E on the back of the rail and get +ve an -ve along the whole rail length, out of reach of fingers but easily reachable by a couple of bolts to make electrical contact.
Any issues anyone can think of with this approach? Only one I can think of is UV resistance...

Re: Adjustable roof rail mounted work lights
Actually, now I think about it, each track could be a switched live, giving 4 different switched power options to the roof area...
