Around the world in a D3 G4. Am I mad?
Around the world in a D3 G4. Am I mad?
Yes. I mean it! I'm actually going to attempt to trek all around the world in my D3 G4.
Many have said I should be in Toyota and some say a 110, but I love my D3 so sod em! I'm going to give it a go.
There's just 2 months till I set off, so its final preparation in so many areas. e.g.. visas, permits, final vehicle prep inclusive of thorough service inc brakes, security grills and vehicle protection. Oh yes and a good selection of spares and more sponsorship would be good!!
I'm hoping that through this forum and the likes of disco3.co.uk that I will meet fellow enthusiasts on my travels who may want to join me on some of the way, have a pint with or just be there for moral support and wave at me as I travel through the continents.
At the moment I'm looking for a recommended garage in the South East who I could work through the service with and other areas of mechanics that I should know to keep me going. But it would also be good to know of any across the world who could lend a hand in a time of need.
I haven't done this before and fairly new to the D3 scene so if anyone can help, advise in anyway then I'm all ears and I'd be very grateful.
If you are interested in reading what its all about or would like to offer support then please check out my mission on http://www.sports-trek.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Thanks
Julian

Good luck. A fantastic trip and adventure
Mad...? Well the D3 is a complex vehicle compared to a Defender etc but if you are able to wield a spanner then there should be no reason why you would be stranded. Just make sure you take the right spares etc. And a Faultmate.
Have you already considered the spares list ?
Looks like your route won't be coming this way (Luxembourg) - otherwise I would be buying you a beer

Personally, I'd give Paul at Challenger a ring or see if Ian 10forcash is in your area.

Wishing I had the time to do the same. Not sure I'd do it in a D3 without my MSV2 at hand though.

Re: Around the world in a D3 G4. Am I mad?
Yeah of course you're slightly mad, but you'd still be slightly mad if you did it in a 110 or Land Cruiser or whatever the most reliable car in the world is. Personally I'd love to do something like that and I did moot the idea with Mrs Stu not so long ago, but she is less mad than me and pointed out the our children really need a better education than they'd get on the road for a couple of years.
Go for it.
I'd suggest taking a CD full of the Land Rover technical manuals and a fault code reader, not sure you need to go for a full on fault mate. As Gary suggested 10forcash or Challenger etc. would be a sensible investment. At least go knowing that you D3 was in tip top condition.I'd suggest getting belts etc. changed before you go. I'd also suggest a shake down trip or two to work out what you really need and what you don't.
Good luck and keep us informed of what's going on. If you wanted, we could probably create a section on here where you could post updates about your trip - a bit like a blog
