Tools req.
10mm & 13mm socket.
Posy drive screwdriver
Flat blade wide (used as a lever) and terminal driver (to release motor plug)
Metal marker paint (or use a tip ex brush or steal some fingernail polish)
The back wiper failed on my D3 it would get half way back across the screen and stop making a horrible rattling noise. After stripping down I found the wheel gear stripped across the center. This is a nylon gear and you cant get just the gear on its own you need a full motor. Its about £120
you can see the stripped gear here
First take off the wiper arm pop the cover off the bolt head and it’s a 13mm socket.
Lift the boot lid and remove the rubber seal the corners pull strait out
The center is held on by T shaped hangers quite easy to remove with a pull across and push back motion
Undo the screw in the handle section of the boot liner.
Then remove the cover over the boot catch. I marked up the location of the catch to aid re fitting and to save re aligning the catch. The metal marker I used was a bit too awkward and I would advise using something like tip ex on a brush. This is a 10mm hex head.
The trim pulls away with gentle persuasion just using your hands to pull the trim off the boot lid
I found the white clips at the bottom came off the best so undid this side first and then took the ones off near the glass which are wedge shaped and just worked my way across pulling one clip at a time.
With the trim off you can get at the motor. Unclip the wires for the rear screen heater that fasten to the motor.
Unclip the plug to the motor, I use a terminal driver to release the clips
Undo the three nuts holding the motor on, I think these were a 10mm head.
Refit the new motor and clip all the cables back in. refit the wiper arm. I decided a test was a good idea before I put the trim back on. To do this you need to push the boot lid catch into the lower tailgate as the wiper wont run with the lid open.
All was well so refitted the trim this pushed back on with a tap with an open hand. The only thing on refitting was I left the piece of trim around the catch until last so I was happy with how the tailgate shut after bolting the catch back on.
Total time about 45 mins including time spent searching the house for batteries the camera.
In old Haynes speak I would call it a 1 spanner job.

Re: rear wiper change
Nice write up mate
Just a note to say that when i took my upper tailgate trim off, i found it has a bloody sharp edge Wearing gloves is a good idea. Also, you might want to add 'motor' to the title

Re: Rear Wiper Motor Change
Ey up, Benp.
Just a quick post to say a thousand thank yous for this excellent post. Saved me ages, and it is a paragon of clarity.
All I would say is that to reattach the bottom rubber trim, it was easier to actually pull out all of the t-pins and attach them to the rubber seal, and then remount it, rather than leave them in situ, and try to hook the trim back on.
Brilliant post, and you're a credit to the site.
Regards,
Damien
