speaking to a tyre fitter and he reckons it may be as the wheels have stood with the weight of the van on them ...

In my layman's view no, a decent brand of tyre used normally should last a good few years. Age is one factor but as we've seen here age is irrelevant relative to condition. I bought my AT's secondhand off the dark side 3+ years ago and they've been to the Pyrenees, Durler and all sorts since then. Tyres that are used regularly and properly made should last a long time (ignoring tread wear). Tyres that are stored on or off vehicles in less than ideal conditions will not last as long IMHO.

However as with all things check them regularly. Kwik fit and similar places normally do a free tyre check of pressures etc and will be the first to tell you if there's a problem (and when there isn't!), and the wheels and tyres should be removed and checked at each service. If the AT's starting cracking up then I will get rid of them as it is a 3t motor. However at present it looks as though the tread will wear out before that.

I even bought a 2ndhand tyre off Derek once

Many on here will have run on tyres and wheels pre-owned by Derek!

I took the spare off today - which is unused and has never been out of the carrier - it has the same sink marks on.
The original wheel seems to be de-layering see pic

I would talk to Hankook to be honest, looks like a possible batch fault. A 4 year old tyre shouldn't do that.

WTF?! I'd be on the phone this morning and emailing them this thread, and asking what time the tyre fitter will be around this afternoon with a full set of tyres.

Tell 'em it's a race to see who gets there first, them or the Watchdog TV crew!

Lot of comments on the internet from the US re sidewall problems on Hankook, although you can normally always find problems about anything on the internet so not sure how common it is.

There's more noise out there in the US than just a few failures could cause :

But there is also a UK recall notice:

The uk recall is a good find, different size but right type and made in Hungary too.

I have had a mail from Hankook today saying to return the van to the dealer and have the tyres changed under warranty. So it seems a result, I need to make a few calls to make sure all three are changed foc
