Re: Caravan questions....
Best advice I can offer is to go and look at some dealers and see what layouts you like.
Older vans tend to be heavier I think, but are in theory at least better made.

Re: Caravan questions....
Have a good look around until you find a layout that suits,
Caravan show is great place as there is every option to look at,
Once you have the layout then search nationally and be prepared to travel to get the right one.
Buy out of season to get better price,
Service history by main dealer,
As said already walk away from any spongy floors and any that smell damp,
I don't have one but damp meters are useful when inspecting vans,
I'd be happy to come along to inspect any van you find you like

Re: Caravan questions....
Would echo what some others have said, layout in some ways better to get right than manufacturer. We choose a layout first rather than make, you will probably need to go and look at a lot first - don't worry if you can afford them or not just use one of the bigger dealers to work out what layout is best for you by going in them all.
Then once layout picked, start to look online for vans with that layout in your price bracket. All the manufacturers have good and bad points so at your price range I wouldn't worry about it, it's much more important to get the layout right. In my experience lots of peeps will say oh you need a Bailey or an Elddis is the best thing since sliced bread, but what you actually need is to choose what works for you.
We sold our first van after two outings because we worked out that the layout didn't work for us and lost a fortune on it - its a very individual thing so important to get right first time if you can.
This site helps a lot http://www.caravanfinder.co.uk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; not least because they have schematics of each layout.
