Marcanterra...Interest Thread

Post by JF Lux » Mon May 26, 2014 7:34 pm

After having spent a weekend in France (day out around the Somme and then a day in Marcenterra) I am proposing a Club event. This thread is only to get an idea of interest to see if its worth the effort of putting a weekend together.

No dates yet. But please post here if you would be seriously interested in a weekend away. Also please post any ideas that you think would be good periods for UK folks to get away (eg any bank holiday weekends etc).

I would rather not have 50 people post and say "yes" just because a thread is put up and then not commit because its not the sort of weekend they want to attend....but obviously dates will be the big decider in the end.

No reason why this cannot be a full family trip.

This may not even happen this year as it will depend on people and parc availability.

Proposal:

Camping in France around Baie de Somme - 1 hour from Calais ferry/tunnel (tents and caravan on same site)
Arrive Friday and with option to arrive on Saturday for those that want to.
Leave Sunday after 18:30 and ability to leave Monday morning.

Saturday:

Open itinerary for people to visit the area. Also (for those that want) drive off to Somme area for tour (90 minute drive for the best areas).

Sunday:

Offroad tour through Marcanterra parc. This is 1,000 hectares of forest, dunes and sand. It will be guided (necessary or you will get lost) and is a full day (9am to 6pm). It will be something totally different driving in sandy areas and you will learn...

Please note - this is a chance to really use your D3/D4 in an environment you will not find in the UK.

Based on my recent trip you should consider that the usual caveats apply - there is always some risk. This is not a gentle stroll along country lanes...but an exciting, full-on driving day (mostly in sand mode launching yourself from high-revving standing starts up narrow, sandy, twisty dune climbs in the middle of a forest praying to dear God that your son is not going to bury the front of your D4 into the rapidly approaching pine tree...). You and your passengers will be bumped and thrown around...you will work your suspension...and you will work your Terrain Response...but very little risk of any bramble rash/scratches...there is a slight risk of "getting it wrong" but not a high risk IMO.

However, there are multiple alternative routes to bypass climbs etc. There is no shame in taking them...well, there is a little bit... But in all seriousness, the day wills till be interesting and challenging without taking every difficult climb and the tour can be adjusted accordingly :thumbright:

The parc is very family friendly for partners and children that would rather spend the day doing something different in a large nature reserve (walking; horse riding; tours in the parc via electric buggy etc)

Costs:

Camping (tent) for 2 people, car and tent would be minimum 21 euro per night (possibly higher if high season)
Sunday would be about 120 euro per vehicle if group of 8 - cheaper if larger group

Weekend limit:

Depends on the final sign-up but I would limit to one group of 10 vehicles or 2 groups of 8 vehicles each (otherwise the tour will take far too long and bits will be missed out)

So...over to the Club...if there is serious interest I will organise a day out :thumbright:

Having signed up, I must say that I'd like to tie it into a longer trip and perhaps drag the caravan down. I also will find it difficult this year to do that (longer trip).

Also close(ish) to some of the Somme battlefields. Spent a very interesting day there on Saturday with Noel (+ The Boy) and JF (+ Son no 2).
