Guys - problem has been easily fixed (for now) - thanks for all your replies.
The sensible ones from Bodsy and methley put me on the right track :thumbright:

It was a case of having to recalibrate the gearbox XY sensor:
1. Low range selected.
2. Drive in each gear until display shows gear selected on dash
3. Start with R then 1 - 6 in sequence until display shows that gear.
4. As this is done the amber EPB warning light is still on.
5. Then stop and turn off ignition. Took key out and waited for a few moments to make sure.
6. High range selected and quick road test revealed that problem was fixed :D

No EPB warning light or message displayed. Gear selected displays immediately. Reverse light and sensors now working. Engine not hunting at idle.
Great stuff now a pleased bunny. Will not need to rush out and buy a D4 or BMW

So now I am wondering why it happened in the first place........
SWMBO had last used the car on Friday. Was recovered from a badly sprained left foot and ankle.
The clue was when she said that the clutch was heavier that our Toyota and can our next D3 be an auto :surprise:
My son-in-law will be giving me first refusal on his low milage HSE
And to cap it she now tells me that there was very heavy Friday afternoon traffic coming out of Colchester
Apparently this symptom can be bought on my cumulative slipping of the clutch.
Time will tell........

Now JASON had offered to check it on his Faultmate but he is too far away. So thanks for this offer mate.
Look like I will have to invest in one of these Faultmate things soon :geek:
Any recommendations guys :?:

Best regards,

Dave in sunny NE Essex

Sorry Jase, I beg to differ. Well sort of......

Well I know you can, but it will fail if you do  ,been there and done that  . Almost impossible to make watertight, and oncce water is in it will fail as soon as the innards corrode. I tried, and it failed in 8mths leaving me stranded as the Emergency EPB release gets affected too.

thank you, not normally a problem for me as I travel about with the Faultmate, either when I was at work or not. You're not overallly far from my workplace but you are when I am at home. If you're looking at buying one, then maybe we should meet up for you to see it actually at work and then you can make your decision from there.

Mine is MV and is D4 licensed, alot of money but has recouped alot of money already, but a SV licence can be upgraded and is always there when you need it.

No probs. What exactly did you repair in yours? And how did you reseal it? :)

Saw that last night, and almost certain I replied.

I opened mine up cos I was getting a SLOW release, I used to drag my tyres for 2-3mtrs before it let the EPB go. I knew my EPB was perfect, and correctly adjusted, so I decided to have a looky of the module. I lubricated everthing that looked like it would move and resealed the module with gutter mastic.

It still gave up the ghost, so it had to be replaced.

Me and a mate have had a look at a few 'faulty' modules recently. The common cause that we've found has been the gearbox, but one had seized cables. All of the motors were fine. Just trialling one of the repaired ones and seeing if it's cost efficient  :thumbright:

It should work, just make sure its resealed correctly. I thought mine was perfectly watertight, but still was wet when it gave up. Can't say that was what caused the failure but dampness in there could'nt have helped.
