Viscous fan

Post by discolrx » Fri Apr 01, 2011 8:54 pm

We are trying to remove the viscous fan so we can get to the alternator, but having lots of trouble trying to remove it. It was only taken off last week at the dealers when it had its cambelt service, but it seems to be incredibly tight, and so far nothing we have tried has even loosened it up.

Hubby is getting rather annoyed as we only have limited time and days to do it as he is working from 4am coming home at 2pm and spending a couple of hours on it, and can't work on it over the weekend so its being done in stages, so far today all he managed was to take off the pipework and then swear lots at the viscous! He had planned to have the alternator out today ready for the new one being here Monday.

We don't have the special lr tool to do it, So can anyone get a picture of one so we can try and make something similar or has anybody down south got one we could borrow for monday (hubby works for the ferries so is back and forth from portsmouth for rest of this week).
Or have any ideas how else we can remove it?

try this, it's basically a long spanner & the other one is to stop the pulley turning.

You know it's a left handed thread, don't you?

Other than that, mine was a total nightmare to get off, and I gave up in the end and took it to the local LR indy to do the alternator. I ripped some 3mm mild steel plate which I used to make a locking tool, that's how tight it was. Even the Indy said it was bloody tight, and he had the right tools and is a big guy!

Stick a big spanner on it and hit the end with a big hammer a lot of times and it WILL come loose! Had the same issue with mine a few weeks ago. Be brave and give it a damn good hit, keep going till it comes off. And as stated don't forget it's a left handed thread! I think it's a 36mm nut if I remember correctly?

We have hit it with lots of big hammers, still no difference, also tried putting heat to it too, even my hubbys mate who owns the workshop who is a big guy tried and nothing. Dont tell him to hit even harder as he might take out my inner wings or something if he misses lol.

Right!

Kingmav has these... if he doesnt need them he can bring them to the AGM to Stu... then to the IOW somehow?

Mind you, they are Jimbo's!

I could drop them at Hovercraft and you could
pick them up from there, assuming we can get them to the AGM.

Well if you could drop them at the wightlink fastcat terminal then that would be great as hubby works on the fastcats.

Maybe Neil can text to see if we can get them.

Fastcat would be fine.
