Transmission failure

Post by DeWet » Sat Nov 06, 2021 9:12 am

Before I begin I need to give some background......bought my D3 with a burnt out TCCM where someone even bridged the popped fuse to properly melt its wires.
Fitted a second hand module and soldered in pigtails of its 3 connectors. It came to life after with everything working, suspension, programmes, transmission, etc. Last thing was the EPB which I was still planning to sort after replacing brake rotors and pads/shoes.

From then while driving too fast through corners it sometimes kicked in the brakes which I assumed was normal. Then once, ppb a month and a half ago it threw a Transmission fault, limited gears available and suspension dropped but still drove. Stopping afterwards and starting the next morning everything worked again.

Three days ago I went to pick up something and at the last intersection where I turned it had a loss of power (still driving). I parked and after restarting the Transmission Fault was back and I couldnt take it out of park.
Since I replaced the cracked dash after I got it and knew how to I removed the centre console top and managed to manually get it out of park to drive home in 1 gear.
I checked fuses in engine bay and all connectors in centre console and engine bay. Replaced brake bulbs and switch just in case.
Scanned, cleared errors and tried again without success. Tried hard reset with no success.

Some of the errors weee pre existing like EPB and wrong VIN on TCCM. The pressure one looks a worry as under the gearbox theres oil but more like breathing through the pan seal than running out.

Any experts that can point me to what I can check?ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

From looking at other posts on the solenoid error it looks like I will have to replace the solenoids?
And mine still has the plastic pan so basically replace pan, filter, oil and solenoids.......gonna cost a bit and need to first go check my transmission code.

Will update as I know

Question - I know it's a crazy idea....but....if it was just a low oil issue......is there a way to put a little oil back in the gearbox maybe through the breather hose to test? I ask as to not have to buy unnecessary things like solenoids before replacing the pan, filter and oil.

Oil in the gearbox is via the fill point on the side of the box - there is a specific method to do it - car has to be level, running and the oil at 40'C you top up until a dribble comes out of the filler.

I doubt it is level if I'm honest. If it was low enough to effect the solenoids, the box will be trashed. IMHO!

It sounds like you need to get the car to a specialist independent - it will probably save you money in the long run - I don't know where you are in the country, but there are several well respected ones in different parts of the country.

So basically ended up doing the right thing. Bought ZF Solenoids and an aftermarket upgraded pan and oil filter. Used Castrol Transmax Automatic Transmission Fluid DEXRON-VI LV
Replaced the connector sleeve, bridge and sleeves while everything was out.

Cleared adaption and error codes.

All sorted and was good to get some marine grease on bolts. Replaced front control arms too while it was on jack stands. While wheel arch liner was out I also swapped out air con compressor since after regas it only worked for a day previous time.

Everything working and feeling great.

2nd time I realised with a Land Rover trying to take shortcuts ends up in way more work and frustration.

Merry Christmas everyone.

Glad it was sorted.

And yes, do it right once!
