I'm sure mine was accessible with a socket extension?
Probably at least 6" from memory

I got a universal joint for the socket & got it on within minutes :D .

I never noticed before (as I haven't had it long) but is it normal for the pump to operate for a while every time the ignition is started whether it needs lifting or not?

I took it down the road for a test & then parked it on a nice level carpark. Looking at the 4x4 bit on screen, it seemed that the left of the car was ever so slightly lower than the right so I got out & looked. The picture of the screen didn't come out but here are the outside pics.

Clearly different
What should the distance be between the hub centre & the under arch?
When I had a D2 I cut measured blocks to place between the axle & chassis to calibrate it. What size blocks do I need to cut for this one? or is there another method?

Yes its not unusual to run on first start up - but shouldn't run for long. Just tops up the pressure in the system.

As for the height, does look wrong. Needs calibrating - the easiest way is to use an IID tool as its latest algorithm makes it very simple to do. Other tools can do it, but can be a bit of a black art depending on the system.

For those who may be interested for future reference, in standard ride height the front should be 466mm from the centre of the hub to the under side of the arch, and the rear should be 485mm.

Suspension Pump

Post by robinhugo » Mon Sep 17, 2018 12:50 pm

Great article - I joined before but lost my email and password details so just re-joined.
I have already used Bodsy's guide for fixing the brakes on my G4 D3 :D

The other D3 now has a regular suspension error - normal height only, no special settings available
The IID tool reports pump slow filling the reservoir - so either I have a leak or the pump is on its way out

will get the car into the garage and see what is going on - read the other post about huge amounts of dust possibly causing over heating, so another area to check

the repair kit looks comprehensive too :

cheers
