Ironically they do allow motorhomes as long as you pitch a tent next to it!

Wow, I can actually post a reply on this one. I was there last October, big deal you say but it's a long way from Sydney.
We went there to see what our family calls machine gun rock. During the war my dad and grandfather were on the beach when a stray dornier flew south and fired off a few rounds at my dad while he played on the beach. My grandfather called the local police who must have put in a call to the RAF who apparently got a spitfire airborne somewhere down the coast in time to knock him down.
Anyway, that's how I came to visit Shell Island.
