Which Discovery 4 / LR4 - 3.0 TDV6 or 5.0 V8?

Hello all, I am based in Germany and I am looking to buy a Discovery 4 / LR4.

I have done a bit of research and I am still not sure whether to go for a locally sourced 3.0 Turbo Diesel or import a 5.0 Normally Aspirated Petrol from the UAE. Including transport and import of a 5.0 from the UAE, the cost of both alternatives should be very similar.

Here my Pros / Cons list

5.0 Petrol
Pros
Currently no foreseeable restrictions entering German cities
Less vulnerable to variable fuel quality
More relaxed cruising on the German Autobahn

Cons
Appalling fuel economy
Less torque
No heated seats

3.0 Diesel
Pros
Better fuel economy
More torque

Cons
Potential ban from entering cities here in Germany
Fuel quality and possible problems with DPF and ECU
Availability of Diesel fuel for private vehicles in some East European / Asian countries

As you can see, I currently have found more pros for the Petrol than the diesel, but the 2 Pros that I have for the diesel are very important points and more immediate as I am not sure when and how often we will be travelling more further a field!

A point on which I am unsure at the moment is reliability:
I have read quite a bit about engine and crankshaft failures with the 3.0 Diesel.
How wide spread are the problems, how seriously should I take this point?
How reliable are the supposed improved post 2012 diesel engines, and from which VIN?

I have not found much information on the reliability of the 5.0 normally aspirated petrol engine, I take that this is due to one of two reasons:
1) There are no known major problems – people are more likely to write their opinions if they have something to complain about!
2) Fewer vehicles on the road with this engine, and those on the road generally have lower mileage / are not used as hard as the diesel engine versions.
What are the known weak points of this engine?

Hi. I joined the forum a few weeks ago and thought I had better introduce myself. I am based up in West Yorkshire. We have recently been looking at getting a discovery due to the untimely downfall of my old car. We like the disco due to the 7 seats and our need to transport 3 untamed children and a 7 month old monster all requiring car seats. I have found a disco 4 I like and will look at buying when the insurance pays out. Before I deposit a lot of hard earned money into a car are there any tips from you guys that I need to look at when choosing the right vehicle? The garage are selling a 3 year warranty with it but after looking at the exclusions the air suspension is not covered. Is the air suspension prone to failure on a disco 4. It’s a 15 plate if that helps. Sorry about the ungodly hour. I am up feeding the baby. This seems like the best time to conduct all my research. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

:welcome:

The air suspension is not without issues - but not as bad as some make out if properly maintained. In 174k miles I had only one instance with total failure and a hard ride home.

The sometimes drop, which can result in compressor failure if they have to work too hard- but sort the leak and it will be good.

Make sure the warranty fully covers the engine. :thumbright:

Hi all,

I bought a Discovery 4 a week ago. I have owned a couple of old ones in the past, just for offroading, with suspension lifts, larger wheels, snorkel etc. But that was a few years ago now. I used to run a Skyline club and forum, but I handed over the reigns a few years ago and got into boating instead.

Anyway back to my new purchase, it's a 2012 HSE in black with tan leather, TV screens in the headrests etc. Bought last Friday and drove 300 miles to Wales on Sunday for a few days away. It has a few more gadgets than my Soon to be up for sale Hyundai Santa Fe and Merc E350.

So far I'm pretty impressed with it, especially 36mpg on the way back from Wales!

Welcome, that’s impressive MPG. My 2012 D4 is on 28.7 at the moment.
