For the Pikeys on here.....

Post by spiderbaby » Mon Nov 17, 2014 5:37 pm

I've just changed the front & rear air shocks out for new ones.

The old ones are now sat in my garage.

If anyone wants them they are more than welcome to them - I make NO comment on their condition except they've been on for 117,000 miles and had the occasional gentle foray onto grass.... Oh - and they're filthy dirty.

I reckon the back pair are the better set - the fronts air bags look ropey. The Voss connectors will need replacing.

If you want them - PM me - I'll hold on to them until this Friday (21st) then it's the tip for them.

If you want Bods to save you a trip to the skip you'll need to put a price on them, then drop the price by 75%... :shark:

At the front definitely - one of the originals had a weaker damper unit - much slower to 'recover' than the other. This made the ride unsteady and made braking shall we say 'interesting'.... The air bags were also showing signs of hardening.

At the back there was a problem with 'sinking' - the front was starting to noticeably ride higher on the road - this has gone now and the car sits level. There is still a little movement on the near side but this is due (I think) to the upper hub knuckle bush being shot - I've a new one to put in when I've planned my method.

The car no longer seems to drop overnight - it used to sink a good inch or so. The compressor no longer has to fire up as soon as I start up.

Overall I think it was just age and wear - nothing drastic just a slow degradation you live with until one day you realise it doesn't feel as it should.

Expensive but worth doing IMHO and certainly not especially difficult

Upper hub bush is an easy job - if you have one of the pressy out type things that Bodsy has!

About an hour's job the first time :thumbright:

I haven't a pressy out thing   Has the Club got one for hire?

My plan was to drift out the old one (but not quite a full benning...) and use sockets and threaded bar to 'pull' the new one in.

Am I right in thinking it can be done in situ by:

1. Removing the wheel
2. Remove the bolt from the bush (hopefully...) - after first marking it up
3. Remove the lower shock bolt
4. Lower wishbone on a trolley jack
5. Ben away....

I was toying with the idea of putting the new bush in the freezer overnight to 'shrink' it but that's because I saw Guy Martin building the Spitfire...

That plan was 'formulated' whilst changing the rear shock - it could be completely carp!!

Any thoughts?

You have the right idea - the pressy kit Bodsy has is essentially a load of different sized "sockets" - though I do think benning it out will not work if it is in the car - it is very tight! Pressing it out is the way to go. And the fit of the socket when pressing it in is fairly critical so as not to bugger the rubber!

Marking the top bolt for rough alignment is right, but I'm pretty sure you don't need to remove the lower shock or hub bolt - there is enough room to do the top by just unbolting it and then pulling the hub forward. Only needs to move less than 2". :thumbright:

Cheers Mark!

I'm guessing this is the sort of kit the King of the Pikeys has?

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/261313692023? ... 72&afsrc=1

This is the cheapest I could find - there is a Lazer one for £300 plus the LR one made from unobtainium & kryptonite....

Might be worth buying if I need to do any others - it equates to about 2/3 the hourly dealer rate or 1 hour and a bit of the local Indie.

It's unlike Bods to miss the opportunity of responding to a friendly dig - you all right mate?
