Diagnosis & updates
Diagnosis & updates
As I'm sure many of you know we had Faultmate for D3 diagnosis and updates. Great tool and and no problems. However it was going to be prohibitive to licence for all late vehicles ie RRS FFRR etc, so we decided a couple of months ago to upgrade to the current and future Land Rover dealer tool, SDD (Symptom Driven Diagnostics).
To say we are blown away by this piece of kit is a massive understatement, it's capabilities are fantastic. In common with probably all vehicle manufacturers systems SDD is a 'live' tool, ie it connects whilst in use via wifi and downloads updates and files as required.
Since purchasing it we have found that all the vehicles we have through the workshop have needed software updates of one kind or another. In comparison to Faultmate this is a particularly easy task as SDD automatically finds the correct file(s) on JLR's servers and downloads them! This takes any guess work out of it as to which file is best suited etc and form a professionals point of view it saves time which benefits both workshop and customer.
We are able to include SDD in our mobile portfolio as well providing wherever that mobile service takes us there is a decent wifi connection.
Any questions please go ahead

Re: Diagnosis & updates
Question for you Gordon (as I don't know) but if you had a car that had had faultmate updates for three flash or clock on the dash (for example) how would sdd treat that software.
Perhaps it will know it's newer version or perhaps it will automatically overwrite it?
Will sdd allow those later software updates and enablements to be added as well?
Be interested to know how it handles them

Re: Diagnosis & updates
Ian,
We have had plenty of vehicles plugged in that we have previously applied upgrades to, it does not override anything. It is a bit of a myth to be honest that files will be re-written, SDD shows you the options in the first place, time then to say yay or nay.
As per Faultmate the options to upgrade to three flash, nav on move, daylight running lights are all there. I don't think it will allow the clock on dash as that would be seen as incompatible with existing hardware (although it's not) however I've not yet had a vehicle to explore that on. One reason that finally drove us to this system was the requirement to upgrade the software for the new compressors, AFAIK Faultmate can't yet do that?
Also there is no reason it should overwrite re-maps unless it is told to do so, so far as I've seen the ECM is not usually listed as of prime concern regarding updates, it is more usually BECM, transmission, HEVAC etc.

Re: Diagnosis & updates
Thanks for that Gordon. So it doesnt do it automatically, it gives you the opportunity to do it.
ISTR the latest version of the MSV Software has some updated VBF files for the new compressor. I havent updated mine yet, but will do so in the coming weeks.
Thanks for the update
Ian

Re: Diagnosis & updates
Yeah, the way I see it is that dealers saying they have had to overrite files are being a little disingenuous! There is, as there always should be, a safeguard to prevent anything that you don't want happening.

Re: Diagnosis & updates
Played with this at the weekend, most dealers have it set to automatically overwrite and take the detail on what's installed from build file. land Rover have to update the build file to update any modifications so it's automatic or anything you added will be removed.
Of course if you do it manually it's ok.

Re: Diagnosis & updates
Yeah that's correct, the 'as built' config. I don't use that as it assumes nothing's been altered and, as you say, will then overrite. Did you look at how it does the diagnosis? It takes you to the solution in very logical steps and also allows more than one route to a solution, important when so many ECU's interact. If I get a chance I'll put some screenshots up at some point.

Re: Diagnosis & updates
Not really the right place - but no matter - it will do!
Second fault probably relates to the ABS sensor on the hub - either the cable has been damaged, the sensor is faulty or the ABS ring has been damaged.
Valve relay one I'm not sure - sounds like a feed is lost - check the fuses under in the engine bay fuse box for a start.
