Wanted - Discovery 4 removable tow bar

Post by Robster » Sat May 14, 2016 7:13 am

Hi

Somehow I have lost the keys to my LR removable tow bar.

Harwoods say they cannot replace lock as there is a pin they cannot remove so I need to replace the tow bar.

Does anyone have a genuine Land Rover Discovery 4 removable tow bar sitting around doing nothing!

I am based down Hampshire area.

Regards.

Robin

I am sure you can change the lock, not done it myself but heard people have. Try Guy a Salmon, the parts are available.

The pin just looks like a pressure fit one to me.

I thought that the recent Land Rover recall for removeable tow bars applied to both D3s and D4s but I may be wrong.

When my D3 went to the dealer for its recall check I gave them the key but when the car was returned to me they had changed the lock and gave me 2 new keys :thumbright:

They are wrong. It can be replaced, many on here have done it. Imagine they would rather sell a £400 tow bar than a £20 lock...

If the recall applies to D4s I'd book it in. They'll need to change the lock to test it

If the towbar is locked on the car with keys lost they will need to remove the old lock to be able to fit the new complete one they have just sold you!
I have changed 2 locks when they have rusted up and not worked as I leave the bar on all the time as an extra parking sensor...

I picked up the tow bar today, minus lock and frankly it does seem to be totally seized.

I have drenched it in WD40 but still cannot get the rotating collar to turn (with a spanner) in either direction.

Just locked completely solid.

I thought I might be able to free it up but no luck so far.

I did try to look inside the lock mechanism but nearly lost an eye!!!!!

I took the two screws out that held a plastic cover in place but the cover was stuck.

Fiddled around and the damn think shot off into my face/eye, luckily it hit my glasses. I had not realised there was a bloody spring under the cover.

Inspected the lock mechanism and it looks as clean as a whistle but still won't turn. :-(
