GSM Boosters

Post by Stu » Mon Oct 29, 2012 9:53 am

Anyone used a GSM booster? Our new house has a pretty poor signal for Orange and Vodafone isn't brilliant. Debating about getting a signal booster.

Such as these:

Just wondered if anyone had used one and what they were like. Possibly a Richard question. I do have a Vodafone sure signal so I might just move Vic onto Vodafone, but interested to see if people have any experience?

We do have a couple of boosters from that very establishment, one of the £500+ ones and a smaller cheapo one which we fitted to a D4 when in Welsh Wales last year. The pricey one works well, but at a price. Was not convinced if the cheapo one was doing very much. Secret is to keep the aerial's very well separated as it's a 'on channel' repeater so if one aerial see's the other you just get it amplifying it's own chuff! Ideally the external antenna needs to be on the roof.
I would stick with the sure signal and move Vic to Vodafone. Use one at home also and it's easy & good.

Wish O2 did something similar. O2 Connect seems to be always on the horizon but never launched. :(

If only I could think of something useful to type here!! :(

As Ken says, the Vodafone Sure Signal does a great job.

I got a V2 model of one for about £35 on eblag but they look to be even cheaper now. Given that you already have one, I'd be looking to get all the phones on Vodafone, it could work out cheaper that buying a general GSM repeater?

To be honest I've got two sure signals sitting in their boxes, so I'll give that a go first and then if it looks good then I think MrsStu will just have to go to Vodafone, but not until I've seen the new bond film on Orange Wednesday!

Not really a direct comment on the results these repeaters give, but i'm always annoyed that rather than the providers sorting out their coverage, they make you buy a box from them that uses your already paid for broadband in order for you to make calls that are still charged at the normal rate even though you've paid for half of its connection. No commercial network provider would allow their network to be used for free but these boxes charge you twice per call!

Yeah i guess a discounted rate would be nice.

As it is ive got a couple of the sure signals for free. My Vodafone phone is a work one and my broadband is free, so it will cost me nothing except the cost of the electric to run it.
