Change of car............ Again.

Post by anglefire » Sat Mar 30, 2019 1:12 pm

I've ordered another car to replace the BMW today. Don't shoot me, but a Skoda Superb Estate.

You may ask why and it is a fair question. Why would I go from a 3ltr 258Bhp barnstormer to a 150bhp old mans car?

The answer is fairly simple. Despite the fantastic engine (And it really is) and its handling in everything other than snow (Not really tested with the current winter tyres to be fair) - its legendary reliability is not as good as BMW would have you believe.

It had a rear diff bush replaced under warranty at about 50k - had both front struts replaced last year when one was leaking, needs brakes doing (Ok service item) its had 4 or 5 new tyres in the last 50 odd k and needs another one on the back. Again items that wear out and also needs the rear suspension sorted - the rear is on air - and the bags perish after about 5 years - my D3 had them replaced at 160k I think and weren't that bad even then.

It has a squeak on the back suspension too - had is from not long after I had it - and over the winter I've not heard it - until now when the weather has dried out I suspect.

Silly things have niggled since i had it - door mirrors don't dip when in reverse. Reversing camera wasn't fitted - and to retro fit a £350 option is £1400 - its over £1k DIY. The seats are great pushing on (And it does that very well) but aren't as comfortable as the Disco by a long shot.

Economy is good - its averaged over 40mpg since I've had it. Almost 50k miles. No complaints there.

Why the Superb?

Well its big. Technically its smaller than the BMW (Which is all bar the shouting the same footprint as the D3) - but the boot is bigger, there is more space in the passenger cell and it does have more storage in doors and cubby holes (Not by much to be fair)
Its lighter- being front wheel drive will be most of the reason.

It does seem to be well screwed together with some very nice tech in it. Adaptive cruise, carplay and screen mirror - the satnav looks to be ok - 9.3" screen so just slightly smaller than the BMW. You can put a sim card in the car itself and share the data via wifi - it uses the car aerial so in theory at least would have better signal.

Has a harddrive to upload music too - much like the BMW does.

Black leather - the BMW cream is lovely but not so practical.

And being 6months old was less than the BMW at 3 years old and carries the balance of the warranty.

But time will tell how I get on with it - given its basically an A6 - which I've had 2 of in the past - I'm sure it will be fine.

I will miss the performance that is for sure. But sometimes keeping the license is more important!

Oh and my insurance is due to expire in a week or so - my current insurer wanted over £1300 - and the broker could only get it down to £900. I did get it down to £590 or thereabouts. Skoda is about £300. Tax is slightly less at £140

And I can get the reversing camera fitted for about £500

"Has a harddrive to upload music too - much like the BMW does"

So does my 2008 407, 20GB, but it shares that with the maps. Nice to see VAG are getting with the times

"But time will tell how I get on with it - given its basically an A6 - which I've had 2 of in the past - I'm sure it will be fine"

Seem to recall your last A6 was in limp mode/ MIL on when it got the chop....

Enjoy it, looking forward to having a go, and yes that tech is sometimes worth having, saved our skins on Sunday night when a fox ran out on the M6, caused a crash which ended up with a Prius being pushed in front of me, we were like :poo: :poo: :poo: :poo: :poo: , soon recovered and Jess was enjoying the video of it a few minutes later :thumbright:

She is indeed, presently lounging on t’other bed in Hanoi hotel room looking at trains and plane options in Japan. We fly there early May and haven’t gotten our heads around that part of the trip yet. Big “hi” to you from her good self. :thumbright: There’s a pic or three on t’other channel if you’re bored/can’t get to sleep and want to see what 3 months of travels looks like. :thumbright:

No the a6 I think was ok when it was chopped. Got a good price from the dealers as it was the daf gearbox 😂.
