What have you done today.....

Post by anglefire » Sun May 28, 2017 7:08 pm

Well, yesterday and today, I've replaced the ARB bushes, track rod ends, upper ball joints, ARB links, adjusted the brakes, and got the carbs setup.

The carbs I was helped with as I've not done them for 20years and I was struggling. As it is, they need a couple of return springs to get them to pull back to the stops properly, once that is done, it should be good to go!

I'd bought some Irwin nut removers some time ago - and they were used several times to get things undone - what a brilliant bit of kit they are - had to cut one ARB U bolt off and the one ARB link bar nut, but my recip saw sorted them out

Now that does surprise me Ben

I've picked up some springs from David Manners near Jnc 2 of the M5 and fitted them this evening. MOT tomorrow - everything will be crossed for that!

And it passed. :thumbright:

Just got to bed the brakes in properly now and find the oil leak. Plus get the carbs to idle properly on choke.

Filled the Spit with fuel, took it for a run, fettled the engine and fine tuned it up better - got rid of the misfire too in the process.

Did reach 50mph - which feels really really fast

I then had to take the kids to some friends so had to use the BMW - and got into it and it felt really high!

Decided to take the youngest to her friends in the spitfire tonight. Pulled it out the garage ( not a lot of space to get in the car once it's in the garage ) and tried to start it. Just a click.
Checked the battery voltage and was fine.
Eventually got it to start by using a jump lead from the battery to the starter terminal whilst said daughter turned the key.
So took to to her friends and came back. Stopped the engine. Tried to start it and just a click.
So looks like it needs a new starter.

Which is a bugger cos the pre-engage ones are fairly rare apparently - the Spitfire normally has a initia type - but mine doesn't due to a previous engine change. :headbang:
