Banger Rally (Was in Dear Santa)

Post by Stu » Tue Dec 14, 2010 7:17 pm

Have you heard about the banger rallies? There are a few of them about, basically you buy a car for under a certain amount (say £100) and then drive it in a rally from say London to Milan. It's a bit like a poor mans gumball. Anyway I've always wanted to do it and I wanted to do it in an old ice-cream van and paint it like the A Team van and give out ice creams to kids along the way. I did look into it bit I couldn't find an actual ice cream van cheap enough even an old 70's one was £2,000. I'd still be very keen to do one at some point though.

i've known a few people do the mongol rally on a serious budget (max engine size is 1ltr).

couple of lads from my old car club did it in an old 1ltr polo breadvan.

I know someone who did one in a old rover 200. They made it look like a skunk and cover the outside AND inside in fur. They had a tail that lifted up and fart spray that came out. One of the guys works in special effects istr. Anyway it was all good and dandy until they got stuck in hot temperatures with a fur filled car stinking of farts. I'll try and post some pics later.

Here are some photos:

I have to say that they really did spend more on decorating the car than on the car itself! :D

I think the fart spray and lifting tail was inspired, but I'm not sure they thought so after a few miles in the heat!
