this is a quick guide for the TDv6 alternator. for the torque settings refer to the Gtr files :thumbright:

Firstly thanks to Club Member mzplc without his help I wouldn't have got the bonnet up but thats a different story.

firstly get the battery terminals off and make it safe

we also got the plates off the bottom of the car this wouldn't have been necessary if I hadn't found my self in a predicament of not being able to open the doors but it is useful to do if you drop a tool or a bolt.

remove the fan cowling and intercooler hose

the fan needs to be removed. There is a special tool to lock the fan. we were able to undo it by putting a spanner on (think its 36mm but I have a big adjustable) and giving it a sharp blow with a hammer. it is a left hand thread. unplug all the wiring.
Image
we then took the air filter and air box off to give a bit of extra space once the top is off and the one torx screw is removed the rest comes out with a good pull

this might not be required but it only takes a few minuets and extra elbow room is always handy.

the belt tensioner accepts a 1/4 drive head so you can take the tension off the belt

pull back the insulator cover then remove the wiring harness. Note on refitting I decided it was easer to put this back on before I bolted the alternator on as it has a couple of lugs that have to slot in and when in position I felt this would be difficult to achieve, it also allowed me to make sure I didn't trap the insulator sleeve

undo the 3 bolts and unplug the connector at the back of the alternator. An additional note I had to use a short torque wrench to get to the bolts and it was easer to do them with a ratchet spanner than a socket set.

put it all back together and check the voltage with the engine running

I would recommend you wear long sleeves as your arms will be rubbing on the inner edges of the wings and gloves are always a good thing

I didn't bother taking the air box out, but agree it would have made access a little easier.

I found putting the battery cable back on the alternator straight forward when in situ as the lug keeps it in the right position. :thumbright:

Cable on after refitting the alternator is definitely the way to do it. I also didn't remove the air box, just the fan.

Just one point on this guide, the tensioner is a 3/8" Hole, not a 1/4" Hole :)

I've taken mine out using steps similar to those here, we shall see tomorrow how easy it goes back in again!
