Winter Tyre Test
Auto Express have carried out some winter tyre tests. They found the following to be the best:
1st Nokian WR D3
2nd Continental ContiWinterContact TS 850
3rd Goodyear UltraGrip 8 Performance
=4th Michelin Alpin A4
=4th Hankook Winter iCept RS
6th Dunlop SP Winter Sport 4D
7th Pirelli Sottozero Winter 210 Serie II
8th Zeta Antarctica
Happy to see UltraGrip high on the list. In fact they scored worse in economy, so in terms of performance obviously pretty good as the economy would have brought the overall score down.

Re: Winter Tyre Test
Just done a little more viewing, and Auto Express did a test with a 2WD Ford Kuga and a 4 WD. They tried both with winter tyres and snow tyres:
All were tested at Tamworth snowdome and was on a pretty steep snowy slope.
2WD and Summer tyres did about 7m in snow
2WD and winter tyres did about 100m in snow
4WD and summer tyre did about 15m but then slid back to 9m
4WD and winter tyres did all the way to the top
It's not quite a fiar test as the 4WD is only 4WD when the car decides it needs the extra grip, but by that point you might already be sliding backwards, so I am sure a D3 would have coped better with summer tyres than the Kuga, but interesting to see what a radical difference it made to the 2WD as well as the 4WD rather than the 2WD vs 4WD debate.

Re: Winter Tyre Test
It's why Da Jazzez are on winters. IMHO that's where they make the biggest difference. D3 will cope with virtually any winter conditions on road tyres as long as the driver engages his/her brain. We're always obsessed with our D3s but forget what out nearest & dearest are driving around on.

Re: Winter Tyre Test
Interestingly, the Snowdome is often quite icy rather than deep snow like you get at the Manchester indoor ski slope so those results are quite impressive

Re: Winter Tyre Test

Re: Winter Tyre Test
There's a hill near us where cars go up & end up sliding back down in the snow. The D3 goes up no probs but so does Jazz on Conti winters. Needless to say I bask in the glory.

Re: Winter Tyre Test
As I said in my 'Frost' thread. My 2wd drive van gets more benefit from Winter's than the D3 does
Also, the last couple of Winters I've had Conti's on the van, as recommended by Ken
This year I have GY Ultragrip, and from my experience so far, they're not as good as the Conti's. Needless to say, next year will be back on Conti's

Re: Winter Tyre Test
pirelli did a weeks press type event at the snow dome when I worked there years ago and they coped very well as Simon said it is very icy and they had brought all sorts of cars including an auto merc that I was convinced would be but it was fine

Re: Winter Tyre Test
Kingmuff, I too have got the ultra grips, so I am concerned by your post saying the Conti's were better, but I don't know how you've made that judgement given that the weather hasn't been too cold or icy. I know you can compare tires on a day to day basis, but I couldn't tell you if MTR's or Ultra Grips or Conti's were better on most of my "normal" drives, it's only when conditions change or my driving changes and I push things that I could tell the difference (excluding noise). So I am interested to know how you've made that judgement. (I'm not being critical, just interested)
