Winter tyres

Post by countrywide » Sat Nov 07, 2015 9:54 pm

Thinking of getting steel rims and winter tyres for SWMBO. Never really seen the need where we live, but everybody seems to swear by them.

What are the best one's.

I was just looking at the same, my Pirelli ATR's now have 40k miles of them and are not looking their best.

I had some Vredestein Wintrac 4 Extremes previously and was impressed with them, although as I recall when the weather warmed up in spring the wear on them went up exponentially.

Camskill (love them or hate them) seem to have a good selection of Winter tyres:-

PM Ken (prob via t'other channel) for his sage advice. I use winter Contis on SWMBO's Jazz and Vred Quadtrac3s on mine. I don't use winters on the D3 as they are seriously pants off-road, plus ATRs are fairly heavily siped so bit of a halfway house.

What car's this for? Interesting how peeps get all excited about fitting winters for their LR but don't even think about fitting them on the car their SigOther drives around in with their kids. Our Jazzez are unstoppable in up to 6" of snow, the point where it starts to pile up underneath. For both cars we have a second set of rims so no talking tyres on or off wheels.

I got Jane Winters last year - and they are excellent - I've bought a set (Got to get them yet) of wheels with Wintracs on - not sure how much difference they will make over ATR's - but I felt the garage wasn't full enough and they were the right sort of price. :thumbright:

We're putting them on the wife's i30 this year. There's loads of choice about on Oponeo, normally for about £35-40/tyre in the 15" size she needs. Think we're going for the Nokian Wr3, have 4.4/5 based on 400 reviews.

The Goodyear winters I have seem fine, but it's not really been very cold since I got them!

I've run them all year without issue, maybe a little more road noise, but I doubt that will be an issue for MrsCW, as she probably does mainly local runs with the dogs

I will probably get some steel wheels as well, the forecast is for potentially a cold winter. If that happens they will be is short supply so will get in early.

Don't worry about the forecast, it will be what it will be. Besides with all the tabloids bleeding on about Snovember and Snowmageddon it's guaranteed to be a mild winter. Hopefully. Resisting the urge to fit my winter tyre sets, if I did we're guaranteed to stay over 15c. However there is no way I'm heading up to Heeland Gaff without full winters on.

Re steel wheels, keep an eye on fleabay for a matching set of alloys. That means whilst you may well need to tell your insurers you're on winter tyres ( ) you won't have the complication of saying they are different rims. :thumbright:

I've used a few different makes on my van, and found Continentals to be the best :thumbright:
