Winter tyres do make a real difference in temperatures below 6 or 7 degrees which is what we normally get for 3 or 4 months of the year. It was working in Copenhagen for 18 months which opened my eyes.

Yes the tyre industry have a vested financial interest but irritating though it might be, they're actually correct.

Perhaps a decent compromise would be to stop the importing of cheap Mediterranean tyres which are barely safe even at their optimum temperatures of over 20 degrees.

Knowing that the idiots who buy the cheapest possible tyres and run them down to almost bald share the roads with the rest of us actually makes me see German tyre law as a very good thing. Winter tyres mandatory and minimum tread depth of 3mm across the whole tread area.

So a serious question then...

Clare and I both have Pirelli Scorpion Ice and Snow tyres fitted right now - those of you who have seen our lane will understand the cautious approach! But the question is - what's the difference in between "mud and snow" tyres and "snow and ice" tyres?

Don't have winters on the D3 but they are an absolute must on the Jazzez, especially considering how pants the original fit Yokos & Michelins are on snow. Good fun taking SWMBO's Jazz out to play if the D3's feeling poorly or otherwise not available. Great getting  looks from peeps when I go up local hills where the RR set don't dare to tread.
