White smoke start
White smoke start
Now that we are having colder climes, I find that the my TDV6 is needing a good bit more winding up to fire on first start of the day & it also blows out some white/grey smoke on that first start. Is this normal?

Re: White smoke start
No. Sounds like you have some glow plugs that are not working. The white smoke would be unburnt diesel being discharged out the back.
Alltrack 4x4 have a good record of getting them replaced without the heads coming off.

A FBH controller to pre warm the engine is what many people do.
I’ve been fitting loads these last couple of weeks. 4 of them today!

Is it likely to cause any problems if I don't sort it for a while?
You have been fitting what? the glow plugs or heater control?

Re: White smoke start
Bodsy will have been fitting the heater controller - to be fair a very worth while addition regardless of the state of the glow plugs. Wish my BMW had the option! Not that I've seen the glowplug operation light, light up yet either!
As for leaving them - yes you can, but they will only become harder to get out the longer you leave them as the carbon builds up around the stem as they aren't operating to help burn it off (Well that's my theory anyway!)

Re: White smoke start
So what size socket is required, does it need to be a long reach & does it need to be swivel type? As regards sticking, do you know whether freeze off helps or is it better to warm the motor first?

Re: White smoke start
I've no idea of the tools required (They are not big units) - but many have tried to remove them and failed and has ended up costing thousands to sort.
Its not something I would ever attempt personally and would rather give the job to a professional that has the experience and the tools required.

Re: White smoke start
IIRC the main problem in getting them out is a build up of carbon around the tip - this prevents them coming cleanly out.
I would think a good soaking in a penetrating oil over a few days plus having the motor hot would help although I would suggest patience and care is more important.
I've not changed mine - I use a FBHIC plus a good cranking battery but have changed them on Fords etc.
I've seen a useful link on YouTube produced by a glow plug maker that gives good information.

Re: White smoke start
Having seen how much sand/mud/grit is down the sides of the injectors of mine (one was level with the top of the block) I'd suggest using a high pressure air line jet nozzle (and goggles!) to try and stop that dropping into the cylinder when you get it free. Probably before adding the penetrating oil.
Just thinking out loud, but is the injector easier to remove and when you do could you use a bent straw to spray decarbonizer fluid across at the glow plug? I've never seen one from the inside so don't know if this is possible, or if the engine is harmed by the overspray/residue.
