Rear metal weights?

Post by Thumpermike » Wed Aug 16, 2017 6:21 pm

Hi all,
Going away tomorrow and just checked my spare wheel and noticed what I can only describe as a metal a weight that swings either side of the rear exhaust tail pipes, what are these and what are they for?

Cheers
Mike

I believe the technical description is 'harmonic balancer' (or something like that) - helps damp vibration.

People have been known to "fix" them - but that just results in vomit in the back seat!

Make sure they are free to move as they make a difference to the ride and comfort of the passengers!

Also, make sure any cables such as the tow electrics cables are routed away from them - the swinging can chafe or crush the cables into a failure if not careful ; some people who have fitted rear tow sockets cheat by not removing the rear bumper and just tuck the cables up behind there instead and it's unlikely to end well.

Cheating is good if you do it right :thumbright: I did John's D4 some time ago without removing the bumper and all wiring was clipped/tied up out of the way :thumbright:

When I first came across these, I had to change the name of the car as I thought I'd got the gender wrong
