More work on Skippy

Post by PillowSmuggler » Fri Aug 04, 2017 9:15 pm

This week I have mostly been trying out a new independent LR specialist to get my aircon pump replaced and my HPF pump belt and tensioner replaced.

First impressions very good indeed. Bodsy's megaflush quietened almost all of the transmission noise and the shunt has almost vanished, but replacing the 11 year old a/c pump (never turned off for the full 11 years, did well I think considering how many times it's been submerged!) and the year-past-it's-due-date HPF belt has made the engine totally silent once again compared to tyre and air cyclone noise.

Very happy indeed. For anyone near enough, the place I went to was MID Engineering at Wantage. Unlike my local LR dealership where I have spent untold time waiting for the parts dept to acknowledge my mere existence (nope, failed), or waiting for an MOT / Service reminder (still waiting), or heaven forbid getting a call back from the sales team when we tell them we actually want to buy one of their cars (go on, guess!) , MID were the epitome of customer service; polite, thorough and perhaps most important obviously very knowledgeable about the brand. The car park only had green oval badges in it, from Series through to D4's so they obviously have a good customer base too.

To add to all that, today I fitted a Thinkware F770 HD dash cam (2 channel, fore and aft ultra HD simultaneous recording and simple and easy wifi access to the recordings) to replace the Blackview that was stolen. Initial impressions are good, and GPS (thankfully) works fine even though the screens heater elements have been known to act as a Faraday cage. I've deep wired this one in so if someone wants it they are going to have to work damned hard to get it!

I'll certainly be going back to MID again - next job will be 4x complete air struts. In the mean time Bods noticed that my suspension compressor was running slow so i also need to give that an overhaul. I have my old compressor somewhere so I'll use one of the graphite ring replacement kits from eBay, seal the cylinder from mud entry and put it back into service. Then I'm sure I have a failing bushing in one of the wishbones - has anyone ever managed to wear out a Polybush bushing yet? If I'm going to replace them again I was thinking of going for something more long term.

4x struts are an easy job Dom - did all 4 of mine in a day.

I concur with Mark, if I can do them anyone can.
I found a crescent spanner helped with the top nuts.

The passenger rear is the worst to get to the top bolts due to the electric junction box. But not hard just awkward

Thanks all; I'm not afraid of that job as it seems straight forwards; it's just my chances of finding a free day at the moment are only slightly less likely than finding genuine rocking horse droppings!

Ah. That is a problem I can relate too

Funnily enough I had about 10days worth of work to do last week, and ended up getting most of it done or it being cancelled. I even had 3rd party it issues to sort.

I did have one job that I quoted £500 and potentially a days work, which turned out to be less difficult as it hadn't done a format c on the drive but had installed the patch correctly. So I was done in 1/2 a day. I was then asked if my bill could be reduced. Er no.
