D4 FBH

Post by Stu » Wed Feb 01, 2017 9:12 pm

So I've been loving my Fuel burning heater and the timed option. I thought it was a bit of a gimmick but it's just brilliant. However I parked up last night with a range of 30 miles and the fuel light on. So no FBH for me this morning as I couldn't be arsed to drive to a petrol station just for that. However this morning I come out to find the car is merrily warming itself. I get in and 22 miles range. So if I'd have had 6 miles range could I have theoretically run out of fuel? I thought it wasn't meant to start below 1/4 of a tank?

Any thoughts?

I'm in a 16 plate loaner Stu. Parked up with 11 miles last night not giving it a second thought as we have a fuel station just up the road. Car warmed itself up as normal and still 11 miles range. No drama, just a nice warm car. On my own cars I never let them get that low. Always fill up at 50 miles range but they could ask for this back at any time so fuel is going in 20 quid at a time.

Careful though, you don't want to do a 'Clive'

I tend to let mine get quite low quite often. I don't tend to subscribe the view that it pulls through :censored:. I think that's what the fuel filter is for and if it runs low regularly then any odd bits that get through will be just that odd bits. If you leave it with plenty of fuel all the time then if it ever does get low then it will pull loads of :censored: through. Not sure if that's a good theory or not but it's what I do.

Stu, that is a fair assessment and a view that I also subscribe. My D3 was rarely filled much before 20miles range - though did depend on location of the nearest BP

Yep, you're on the money there. Modern fuel is clean and diesel (being heavy oil) prevents rusting of fittings, tanks are made of plastic, there really isn't any way of :censored: forming unless a vehicle stands for long periods.

The only thing I don't like is doing a 'Clive' cos the fuel pumps rely on fuel flow for lubrication and heat dissipation. If they are run dry it can damage them.

When the car is asleep, it seems thatthe fuel level is not registered as the controller is not looking at fuel, it's just looking to make sure that the fuel pump is running and that the fuel measured dose intot the Fbh is correct.

Having said that, with some cars, it won't run......

It is a bit bizarre.
The low fuel lockout is when running the engine and it tries to fire up three times, therefore the car is awake and fuel level is measured....

I wouldn't be shocked if the car made a note of the fuel level in the fbh controller memory when the car was last turned off. That way it would know up front not to run based on the last known fuel level. As a guess at a software solution it could be dependant on the version loaded, and that could be the difference in behaviour from car to car?

I would be shocked if it did - the FBH is similar to the D3 one - well the same? - I would say it would only trigger the low fuel inhibit if it had run the day before and had gone into low fuel inhibit - but in the UK afternoon temperatures are often not cold enough to trigger the FBH, so no need to flag low fuel, but cold enough for the FBH to be time started the next day.

I find that emptying the tank occasionally prevents the build up of :censored:, but this can add time onto your journey if not meticulously planned

So Clive did you just run out of fuel the other day?
