VDO PC5200 - MA1200 cable

Post by Globetrotter » Tue Jun 21, 2016 2:00 am

Folks, I am a new owner of a 2007 Land Rover Discovery 3. This vehicle has a VDO Dayton PC5200 Nav system fitted. My problem is that I want to connect a reversing camera to this unit and it needs a VDO MA1200 cable. I have searched and not had any success even with VDO Dayton. So what I am looking for is the pinouts or a schematic or what pin to connect the video too so that I can make my own.
If someone has an old MA1200 cable they are not using I would look at purchasing it
Thanks for anyone that can help

I'm not sure if you just need a cable, I thought you needed a GVIF box?

I'm sure Bodsy will post on this with all the info.

Having said that I do seem to vaguely remember that you could get a cable but it wouldn't show up on the screen when you went into reverse. Hmmmm I'll have to try and remember what that was all about.

Hiya,

The VDO system is not a LR fitment, it's aftermarket. I'm afraid I can't help with the pinouts for it.
It would also need a reverse selecter active cable as well. From the user manual, there doesn't seem to be reverse camera option, but perhaps that's an advanced menu that's not covered in the manual.

Thanks for that. The cable is specifically for the PC5200 box to connect a reverse camera. It seems one is supplied in the install kit, but as the LR is secondhand I am not sure where the cable is. The menu system has a "tick in box" to tell it that a reverse camera is connected to the PC5200 so once I find or make a cable, hopefully it will work hence the pinout requirement.
Excellent job on the brakes, will follow that when they need doing

Globetrotter, I'm not wishing to dispute your findings, but the diagram in this pdf I found seems to think that ma1200 cable connects the screen to the 5200, with an independent separate socket for the camera - perhaps a design change?

Hi PillowSmuggler, you are correct - what it is, is a "Y" cable where you pull out the existing cable and plug the MA1200 into that location then plug the cable you removed into the end of the "Y" cable, this now leaves a Din socket to plug the camera into. This is why if I had the pinouts of the cable I could connect my own "din" to a couple of pins in the existing socket giving me the camera input. Hope I have explained it okay.

Folks, thanks to all who responded with information. I contacted VDO Continental Australia who graciously contacted Germany and obtained a drawing complete with connecters and pinouts. Now to find connectors and make cable.

An Update - now that I have the pinouts I had to find a supplier for the connectors. Mitsumi in the USA told me the connectors are "old stock" and not readily available but a nice gentleman at Mitsumi contacted Japan and I now have connectors on the way to the USA and then they will be forwarded to me so that I can make my cable up. It has been long winded but I'm getting there.
Today the fuel guage stopped working so I need to trace that problem - another task

@Globetrotter Hi Globetrotter, ive a discovery with the same VDO Dayton system in, i too have looked into fitting a camera but cant seem to work out how to install my VIDEO IN to the spare pins. Ive researched an found to see the MA 1200 seems to be the cable ill need to add but like you say impossible to source one! Reading your post just wondered if you had found the solution to a DIY install, and if so would be kind enough to share :thumbright:

Thanks
