My new 'tent' #2

Post by RichardB » Mon Sep 12, 2011 9:30 pm

I know this is not exactly original and has been done before but I was up in North Wales at the weekend and needed to camp. As I was on my own for once and the weather was looking iffy I decided to try kipping in the car.

Flipped down the rear left an centre seats. Inflated an air bed in a couple of mins, job done. And a really good night's kip untroubled by gale and rain. And no wet tent in the morning so was ready to go as quickly.

I'm definitely going to go down this route when solo. It's so easy. For those of you over 6', might be a bit tight but there some advantages in being a bit shorter!

Only drawback is that I don't have tinted rear windows. Would be handy. Perhaps some nice curtains instead...

Such a versatile motor :D

Kip with your head at the tailgate end and have the load cover pulled over, keeps most of the light out!

I'm 6'2" and I've slept in the D3 numerous times. I agree with Richard about head at the tail gate end. The rear "map" lights in the boot make nice reading lights and the cup holders are nice for a bottle of water etc. I even have my key fob set so that the bottom button opens the tailgate, so I can open it from inside the car. I personally don't bother with the load space cover, but if the light bothers you then it makes sense.

Interesting thought about sleeping head to tailgate and use the load cover. Of course, I tried it the other way round and I didnt have load cover in the car (usefully left in the garage). However I was sleeping on a pretty thick 20cm mattress so I have a feeling that I'd have been nose to cover with that.

I did spot last night a set of fitted sun shades that attach to the 2nd row and back windows (including rear) that might just give the desired privacy and could be useful at other times too.

Jaysus God above....

The thought of walking past Stu's D3 and potentially seeing his ar5e and dangly bits peeping out from under the load cover is a horrible one......

Stu - please, please tell me you use a closed sleeping bag and there's NO possible way of flesh being exposed...

No dangly bits on display! Nice and snug in my bag.

You should be more worried about the snoring!

Its going to be so much fun for you and Bods in the Pyrenese trying to outsnore each other.

Christ what have the Spanish done to deserve that!

And of course thats without the little gremlins popping up under JFL while he gently sleeps

Must admit I didn't hear Bodsy last weekend - but I did hear Stu - must remember to camp at least 100yrds away - the 50 last weekend obviously wasn't enough. :rasp:

That or camp in France :surprise:
