Recommend me a Soldering Iron/ Station

Post by CDS » Tue Mar 17, 2015 10:26 pm

Have had a few heap (and therefore :censored:) soldering irons, but would like to invest in something that'll last (and work!)

What do you guys recommend?

I'd not bother, just get Andy to do it, he's better with any soldering iron than I am with a really expensive one.

Weller. No contest. They are still the standard in electronics factories just as they were when I was a test engineer back in the early 80's.

There are many variations on the theme, analogue, digital etc BUT.........they all use the same basic principle, low voltage, earthed tips, standard parts which are all readily available to refurbish the thing etc. Mine is still going strong after 30 years although it's a bit like Mark's D3 Trigger's Broom now.

An example.

And a portable gas unit.

I'd fully agree, Weller is the way to go.
Also in the 80's one of my first jobs required Computer motherboard diagnosis and repair, I remember getting the delivery from Farnell of a Weller soldering station and foot operated de-soldering iron as well. It was like Christmas came early, they were so much better than the devices I'd used before.
