After J@mes' latest offering, its not the swearing Stu should be worrying about but the other contentcountrywide wrote:I don't think some of the words mentioned are really swearing. But there have been posts with the other words changed to get around filter.
The argument I don't get is that it happens elsewhere so it's OK then.

Re: People bypassing content filtering
Just to clarify, I'm not really worries about this, I just noticed it was happening and thought it was worthy of discussion.
What I find fantastic is that this thread is 7 pages long, has had a number of different opinions and views, yet it hasn't got personal and the debate has been kept on topic.
It's all a bit sensible, unlike most of us in most posts. Well done everyone! Amazing.

Re: People bypassing content filtering
I'll be honest here in that I have read page 1, and page 7.... (i will read the rest when I get a mo!).
Whenever a question like this comes up, I always want to go back and ask, 'what problem are you trying to solve?'.
Without knowing the answer to that, my personal assumption is that this is a family friendly forum and therefore we run the risk of laying down language which isn't necessary for all to hear.
However, reading Dom's reply I 110% agree that electronic sentences cannot convey emotion without being overly articulate, and unfortunately swearing seems to be one of the most articulate ways to describe a situation or feeling!
So - Could you not impose a default stance (like we do now) on filtering, but provide forum users the option to override this and permit obscenities to be displayed?
The above would mean those who feel the need to be expressive with obscenities can do so using the correct words, knowing that people who want to understand the detail of their emotion can and likely will.
All other users who are not concerned either way, or have a desire not to be reading bad language won't have to lift a finger.

I'm not sure if there is a mod available to do that. It's a sensible idea and will give Mark something to think about!

Re: People bypassing content filtering
It can be done in theory with a simple switch - but its not forum based - i.e. it would be nice if it was implemented to restrict it to the towbar for example.
But as ever with permissions, its working out what takes priority.
But the challenge has been accepted.
