Good luck with that trip, Del.
If you want to borrow a Sankey and hitch adapter to maximise the amount you can bring back with you, give me shout.

It will be a sad day Del - but Give us a time and I'm sure we will all join you in a glass of something medicinal.
Its fitting that it hasn't just whimper off but has taken you to a nice place and done it in style - and you could be recovered fairly easily - lots of places you've been that could have been very troublesome.

Re: What have you done to your D3 this week?
Tell me about it, even a couple of weeks ago I was up logging trails in Finland with no phone signal and no sign of man nor beast anywhere. No, she chose a good place to start the end game, even the gearbox cable failing was in a nice easy place with phone sig and good 3G.
Once you look at the numbers it's easy to see there is no answer but to leave her there. Long and short of it is it would have cost £9,000 to get my car back to the UK. AA would pay £5,800 (what they thought the car was worth ) of that cost (me paying £3,200) unless it was uneconomical to repair. Even ignoring the uneconomical to repair bit and it got shipped back I would have to spend, say, £5k (so £8.2k all in so far) on a risky second hand engine for car with a WBAC valuation (in June at 6k lower miles, assuming good condition which mine isn't) of £3,200. Even worse if the AA deem it uneconomical to repair (£5k second hand engine for a car the value at £5.8k) then to get the car running would cost me £14k (£9k recovery & 5k engine). The AA wouldn't pay anything for repatriation. No, the numbers just don't stack up and the car just isn't worth £8k to me, or £14k. Hence it's toast.
It might sound heartless but the numbers speak loud and clear, even if I didn't have the D4 it would still be toast and I would be heading up there to get some stuff in my Jazz.
Had a couple of beers last night and toasted her. She's done me proud, taken me places most peeps will never go to and kept me that little bit poorer, all at the same time. Now it's time for her to rest. She's just a car, as I well know there are more important things out there that we loose, a car is not even close to getting on that list.
Off to pick up my kit tomorrow, 4 day drive, then the Road Trip 17 continues. And if the D4 has any other ideas she'll get severely told off.
Will post when I last see her and have a couple of beers that evening, hopefully in front of the oztent by a Swedish lake with a fire crackling on next Wed night.
Like here, except the car will be silver, and that's the Norwegian Sea.

Your logic is totally correct. And I suspect most would have done exactly the same - though not sure about Bodsy - he might return with a van and trailer or worst case a set of spanners to recover all/bits as appropriate.
So, do you think this is your last road trip?

Don't know, it's put a bit of a dent in my confidence Road Trip-wise. We'll see for next year. I've got much better European cover for the D4, plus WD warranty so it shouldn't affect things but being stranded for days twice in just over 1 week was not fun. I like the high Arctic but maybe somewhere less remote and preferably somewhere with darkness! Midnight sun really messes with my brain!

Re: What have you done to your D3 this week?
Am using the iPhone, I know that can create issues.
This compressor was from AF with a three year guarantee. The AMK (Arnott) compressor they sell I was told is not like-for-like and won't fit the D4, so I went the Bearmach route. Straight swap.
Not to hideous a job this morning and grateful to Bodsy for answering a few text very quickly. This was my first big job on the car. Until recently, I would have normally got an indy/dealer to do things like this.

Ah fair enough. 3 year warranty is good to be fair.
That Bodsy chap is pretty good - not that he has rung me back yet
