Intercooler protection
With Salisbury coming up I'm intending to do a few very gentle lanes in the D4 as I'm not looking to "off road it" like I did the D3. One thing I am cautious of is the amount of :censored: in the intercooler and how that affects performance. Anyone got any ideas or provent solutions for protecting it for the day.

I've used opened out hessian sand bags over the radiator and as much intercooler as I could reach, and although it was scary how much :censored: they caught, I still spent just as long with the hose cleaning the finer mud out of it all afterwards. The only complete protection is a total cover, which totally defeats the purpose anyways, or get a raised intercooler to reduce its deep water trawling ability.

Don't forget, the D4 intercooler is not the brick type as per the D3, but a much thinner intercooler that sits with the radiator and AC condenser.

Ah so does that mean it's better for off roading than the D3? I've barely opened the bonnet on the D4 and not closed the bonnet on the D3 for over a year!!!

Better in that the intercooler is higher up so gets less crud in it and is also a bit easier to clean I think when it does.
As for better at offroading than the 3, that is a good question. Ask JohnF about the rock climb in the Pyrenees a couple of years ago - everyone in D3's got up first go - he took three attempts. Claimed it was because he was in the wrong gear as his is an 8 speed............
