French Camera

Post by Stu » Sun Jul 16, 2017 8:44 am

Got flashed by a camera in France.

Will I get a fine sent to me at home or do they just ignore foreign plates?

Don't think I was doing much over the speed limit but I wasn't too sure what the limit was.

Likely but not definite. They are working on about a 6 month delay for non French nationals. But it also depends on "final calculated speed". I.e. Your speed minus an adjustment. I got a 45 euro fine for doing 132 km/h but actual speed recorded was about 143

Well I now have bigger issues to worry about:

Basically narrow road, I approached a bend and had a bike come round at speed and he didn't make it.

The bike ended up on top of him and he had a bad cut to his leg. His wife was pillion and was ok but I was worried at first as she wasn't moving. They went off to hospital and I spent 6 hours with the Police. About 2 of those were at the scene waiting for the bike to be recovered and then the rest at the station trying to speak French and English to explain. I'm very pleased that I bought a new dashcam on Friday as I was able to show them that. I'll upload it tomorrow for you guys.

Because the guy was injured the police don't deal with it, a judge does, so he will review it tomorrow and then see if anyone gets a fine. The policeman said he thought we both might get a fine but if I do I think I'll be peeved as the video shows how slow I was going and there is no skid marks from me, yet he has quite a long skid mark.

Still I suspect it will be easier to fine both of us!

Guff!

And I suspect my insurance company will want the excess as well!

Guff and arse!

The other guy needed stitches but he's ok. The rest is only metal and will be sorted.

This may be of help if you need some advice as someone has been injured and there will be a criminal investigation.

There might be a lawyer listed in your area that you could ask for advice if need be.

Hopefully it will be resolved quickly and you can enjoy the rest of your trip

Bit of a bugger Stu. Hopefully there is enough proof in the video that you weren't at fault. Though seems to me that over here, the bigger vehicle is always at fault whatever, not sure about in the land of the garlic munchers.

If you're looking for a pair of doors there's two in Arctic Norway going begging, Sortland to be specific. You'd just have to start the Polo Harlequin processes with Buck Blue doors.

Re flashing, there was something just after my last jolly on the continent (end May) that speeding could now be more easily enforced sur l'continent. Handy as I got flashed in Germany after leaving Luxembooooooooourg.

which country ? Have you been told you are "free to go on your way" or is there an expectation you will be required to go back to the police as part of investigation by the judge?

Keep in mind that not every country allows dashcam footage to be admissible as evidence.

And if your insurance has legal cover I would call it in even if its just for peace of mind - different countries, different rules and this is an incident involving at least one vehicle from another country so its never going to be quick or smooth...
