Buying D4 Advice

Post by DiscoStew » Thu Nov 16, 2017 4:04 pm

Hi just after a bit of advice please

I’m about to take the plunge and try and scrape the money for a second hand D4

Looking at 3.0 TDV6 / SDV6 09 / 10 plate around 100k miles
I’ve accounted I believe for the 7 year cam belt change approx. £600?
I’m making sure it has FSH and believe the rear air suspension is another thing to check

I currently do 25k a year miles so I’m after something comfortable and will let me put on 50k of trouble free miles
Is the 100k to 150k relatively trouble free?

The other option is a shogun but I’ve heard they can be agricultural in comparison if 2 k cheaper

Many thanks in advance

At that mileage check both inlet manifolds for oil misting. If it's evident, check if they've been replaced, in fact, check anyway. I had one go at about 95k and the other at 112k. Mine's a MY11. :thumbright:

I would add the suspension bushes are probably going to be getting towards the end of their lives at 100k given that its a heavy car not a surprise

Agreed re arms/bushes. Had mine done three times since owning the car. Bought at 50k on the clock, now 117k. Hence the reason for opting for SuperPro poly bushes the last around.

Check for gearbox oil change as even withLR service history, they don’t change it until 150k miles, which is way waaaaay too late.

Any juddering when going up hill in third gear is a sign of bad oil and/or torque converter.

Other than that, check parking brake works and all of the electrical stuff works.

Also, lock the car, then give the key t9 someone else away from the car, then go back and check all the doors are locked still!
