Looks like one could get the same effect by poking a plain end of a rope through the towing eye and tying a stop knot on the end of it. I would then take my pictures from a considerable distance away.

You would be better off using a longer rope and pass it through the eye of the cars recovery point and shackle it at the other end. Use some "Boot laces" to tie the two ropes together to stop them dragging apart etc and at the car's recovery eye to stop it slipping.

If you took all the metal out of the recovery, then apart from an increased risk of recovery failure, it would at least be a soft (ish) failure. I'd certainly not risk it for a heavy recovery, but for joining a strop to a sling to pull a car should just ensure you don't rip the front off the car? I'd see this as being like a fuse, a known point failure that you can use to control the maximum energy in a recovery.
Of course, I could just be bonkers...

I've used Nicks small plasma lengths that he made up for charity to recover a couple of cars. No problem and there wasn't a huge strain on them per SE, but I used them to go round chassis points as no recovery eye. Easy pull and easy to put on and take off without damaging bumpers etc.
