spiderbaby wrote:I like the look of them. I agree the front needs sorting out so it’s less likely to dig into deep mud – if it did I’d be worried about the pressure being so great it ripped the mounting bolts or something.
Yes, the front will be longer on the upsweep buy another 40mm or so and also wider - inline to match the side bend.
spiderbaby wrote:What are you planning on doing to the sides? It’s looks OK to me.
One side will sit on the chassis rails with a thin piece of rubber to avoid rattles and any potential damage to the rail.
spiderbaby wrote:I guess you’ll use a low profile bolt on the centre mount – the way I shape that Allen bolt would soon be f**ked… J
See above.
spiderbaby wrote:Is there any option to increase the sides out so that they are on the chassis rails and a nice GNVP alloy sill? I was just thinking about not having any pressure on the casing if it can be spread a little onto more solid bits.
This is the million $ question. In an ideal world this would be a bolt on affair. I agree that to let the outter part rest of the sill/slider would be great but then we narrow the market and increase the varients for Sliders (Steel/Ally) and Normal Plastic or orther makes of kit. This way it keep it simple.[/quote]
spiderbaby wrote:If it’s the right price I’ll have one – but don’t bother powder coating it - I prefer the look of plain alloy (does that get me a big discount?)
Powder coat will be standard as the silver looks really beefy. Would be great to make it more subtle.

Subtlety on a 2.7 tonne 4x4...?

I'd prefer the plain alloy colour.

I'll be up for one at Hogmoor if it has the mods Ken suggested. Tempted by the plain version but will decide when I've seen a powdercoated one!

That looks the dogs danglies Neil....I like it a lot.

Any initial concerns have been cleared up after reading the whole thread.

Compared to the original plastic offering, this new one is massively over-engineered (which means I like it!!).....how many people have actually damaged compressors off-road? I don't know anyone, although I know lots that have damaged (not fatally) the air tank........

I agree on the finish though - plain ali is what I would want :D

Nice work :D

Thanks Paul,

It was a discussion Gary and I had after we built it - lots of talk that it was a good idea but none of them had ever known anything happening to the compressor - so we were :? :? :?

BUT many have said they want one so I wont argue!

I'm sure people have damaged the compressors by using an airjack under them, so I think this would help.

If you consider the situation that Gary was in, in Bala with the rock underneath the car, that could easily have been under the compressor and done damage. I think they will be a sensible precaution.

Rocks are a problem if you are on very uneven terrain and the vehicle drops onto a rock, landing compressor-first. I know some of our overseas compadres have done this. You generally wont hit a rock with the compressor through forward motion - it'll hit something else first. Branches are also a problem - the wheels can kick thick branches up under the car and jam them into places they ought not go - disloging the compressor or potentially breaking it clean away...but more commonly just ripping the electrics out.

Rocks are more of a problem on sump, gearbox, sills, fuel tank and exhausts / spare wheel / tow bar. Everything else is higher up although it is logical to cover rear diff, exhaust and spare with a single guard plate. Or shorten the exhaust. Or both.

Due to the current mounting positions this would need to be advertised as a protection for the compressor, not a 'bump stop' or sliding' item.

Think that would run?
