And the fact that people think they are build like tanks, so would rather hit a stone wall than clip a defender

Front or rear collisions I agree. Side impacts however are a completely different matter,something I've seen 1st hand. Actually a bloke I worked with and his Series 3 got hit in the side by a Ford Fiesta which resulted in a broken leg, broken hip and 7 months recovering from it. Fiesta driver walked away. There's no outer chassis rail,side impact bars,airbags,nothing. In a side impact it's all about the flimsy aluminium which doesn't have a lot of tensile strength.
This, as Dom points out, is why rock sliders are a very sensible addition.
