basically what it boils down to is that phpbb isn't very efficient in some of the things it does so if someone starts crawling a lot of pages in a short space of time then it brings the site to its knees despite being on a fairly powerful server.

I've been researching ways to automatically ban any IP that starts consuming too many pages too quickly so that we can harden the server against this sort of "attack" - we will see!

Well, my take, which may or may not be right, is that there are some bad peeps out there that think they might be able to find some interesting information on the forum. So they hit it with lots of search queries. So far nothing interesting has been found

Ben, there's no real way to tell the intent as there's no real way to tell the originator. Problem is that the Israeli and Canadian IPs could simply have been compromised PCs or even smart phones under the control of malicious software.
The reason could be any one of an almost unlimited number of reasons, including :
  • searching for a political target
  • searching for peoples home address details for identity theft
  • kiddy fiddlers looking for somewhere safe to hide their sick treasures where they aren't implicated
  • governments looking for terrorists or tax dodgers
  • a hacker looking for a challenge
  • a hacker looking to steal a domain to send spam from
  • an overly aggressive search engine
I could carry on, you get the idea but it's not exactly exciting
