I think I made a boo boo?

Post by Dave_Harris » Sat Feb 09, 2013 6:32 pm

Picked up some roof rails today in preparation for getting the expo roof rack.
I perhaps didn't appreciate that these weren't the full length rails and only cover the rear 3/4 of the roof thats raised.

Am I right in thinking to support the expo roof rack I will need 'full length' rails?

They're fine. If you have the full length ones you have to take them off to fit the roof rack! So all good.

Are you going to be at the mids meet Monday? :thumbright:

Dave, you're fine. We're they the ones on that eBay link posted on here?

Good to hear,

And yes Stu, they were the ones from the eBay link you posted....
Considering the prices I had seen elsewhere, I am chuffed to have snapped them up for £97! They are virtually brand new and not a scratch on them.

Bodsy - most certainly going to be there Monday. Will bring the wheel with me.

Forgot to mention, they are missing the caps for the screws that bolt it to the roof. I suspect with the rack on top I won't see them, but I'm more worried about weather proofing the screws. Anyone know if the caps can be bought separately or recommend any alternative methods?
I thought about a basic silicon sealant which can be easily picked out in the event I need to get them off?

Not sure about where to get them, but if you're concerned about the weather a little blob of silicon would sort protect them.

Silicon will work. I just put a dab of grease on them and never had an issue with them being exposed (unlike some other parts!). Mind you, I used to put the rack on and take it off again almost weekly!
Get a set of spare bolts and swap them if any look corroded :thumbright:

Btw, front of expo has shark fins to make up the gap between the rack and the plastic roof strip...which you'll probably have to cut, so see if you can swap the strips with whomever you are getting the rack from.

Strip just needs one hole in it for each fin. :thumbright:

Get some spare white plastic clips for the front of the strips where they attach above the windscreen as they have a habit of failing and the strip fold back against the roof at motorway speeds with a thwack! Appears drilling/bolting through strip can weaken clip.
