To be fair, Del - some is needed, some is preventative, some is for spares...and the full V8 brake upgrade is just because...

Well, you lot think you have problems!

The starter on my Spitfire decided to stop working. So get a replacement or a refurb.

Easy. Yes?

No.

It looks like my starter (Pre-engaged type - Spitfire is inertia as standard and replacements are £30 a pop) is from a Dolomite 1500 - and is rare. Really rare. Hens teeth rare. Baby hens teeth rare.

Did I say it was rare?

So contacted a few classic suppliers and looked at the various classic websites. Can't get them. But can do an uprated one. Ok, thats fine - so I get one. And its the wrong one. So get another one. And looked like it didn't fit, but found it needed the flange off the old one. So fitted it all tonight (Missing the rain!) - turned the key - and Clunk. Nothing. Click and lights on the dash dim. Voltmeter shows the battery is fine.

Try and turn the engine from the crank pulley and its solid. Starter is jammed in the ring gear. :headbang:

So its got to come out and go back.

But not tonight cos it's raining again.

SWMBO made the suggestion that it would be easier to get a new engine..... I'm starting to agree.

Checked the DVLA site and Dark Bluie is officially gone, i.e. exported. She'll be turned into Norwegian Coke cans or whatever else they use old cars for.

Here the last night before she threw the towel in. Bye bye Old Dee.

Agreed, it's just a car. It's done it's job, she's now in retirement. I was lucky in one way, the decision as whether to scrap her or not was an economic no-brainer, and lucky there were facilities to do that fairly close to where she ended up.

Finally got the starter on the spitfire sorted. The place I bought it from essentially passed me to the manufacturer which was only a few minutes from them and they re-engineered it to fit my car by changing the drive pinion etc.

They are planning to make it available for others with the same issue though the market is fairly limited.

The upside is that I now know what my engine actually is. The engine number relates to a 1300 dolomite, but having measured the engine stroke it is actually a 1500. And based on the starter has a dolomite 1500 flywheel and presumably crank etc.

So not only has it a Gt6 bonnet it has a dolly engine.

Still when it starts it sounds like a merlin starting - has quite a whine to it :thumbright:

Del - how can you manage to get your new (to you) D4 so untidy so quickly? I've had 4 Acrows, a garden shredder and a load of tree pruning kit in mine today and it looks pristine compared to that.

Are you related to "Pig-Pen" in Charlie Brown (Peanuts)?
