Going to prepare mine for the slow and blizzards forecast form Caroline up here. Extra bag of wine gums on the shopping list as emergency rats.
Merlot, Chardonnay or perhaps a pleasant Riesling?

Now you mention it, that was all delivered yeasterday from Wine Soc. 24 bottles of their finest reds (well as fine as I can afford) plus 6 extra cheeky little cheap Tempranellos that's are   .

Really weird, forecast is talking about blizzards and significant snow from Friday onwards and it's +9.6c at the mo. Snow shovels and wheelie bin are at the ready though. :thumbright: :thumbright:

PS those wine gums look yuuuuuuuuumy! :shark:

Today I’ve stripped off the carbs and exhaust off the engine, then took off the water pump, fuel pump, head, timing chain cover and finally removed the cam.

Then fitted the new cam, which is a slightly warmed up one which should run nice on the road - nothing too hot as it shifts the power band up which I don’t want as the engine is better kept at lower revs. This should have a nice power spread from 1500 to 5500

I’ve also converted the single timing chain to a duplex one

Now I’ve just got to Time the cam to the engine and put it all back together.

But first I need to get a couple of new head studs and a fuel pump stud as the later is completely stripped and the former not as clean as I’d like.

I’m also waiting for the right head gasket as the one then sent in the kit was for the wrong engine. Mind you a complete set of gaskets for a head change is only £15 and that is for the good head gasket that lasts longer than a few hundred miles.

How come there's enough room for a duplex chain in place of a simplex one? I've only ever seen chain running channels, voids and guides being slightly larger than the original chain. Mind you, I think I've only seen wet chains running in the oil; do they do them externally where there's more room?

I've no idea - but it fits! The single wheel is quite long so there is room for a second toothed wheel.

Should stop it from stretching - the tensioner is very crude - just a bit of bent spring steel

Oh and yes, its external to the engine, behind a pressed steel cover. :thumbright:

Outside the casing makes sense, the internal ones seem to have very tight clearance gaps!
As for the tensioner; KISS works I guess; Look at what happens when you make the oil pump casing an integral part of a tensioner solution!

Being as there was naff all on the tv last night and the correct head gasket arrived along with some new bolts and studs, I decided to Time up the cam and put it back together.

Got that done easily enough and the chain cover back on.

Where it all fell apart was when it came to torque up the head bolts. My small torque wrench is too small and my big one too big :headbang: so it looks like an early Christmas present and a trip to Halfords. I noticed that the latest torque wrenches are a different design, but are still Norbar ones.

I’ve also not quite worked out how you torque up the studs - well I get the principal of using two nuts - but the undoing them afterwards without undoing the stud again in the process

Weirdly Mark the two nuts works quite simply, though when ever I've fitted a stud there's been a special oval deformed nut that you tighten the stud in with that opens up into a shakeproof nut once the correct torque is reached in the block, and then starts tightening up against the manifold instead - two actions with one nut. Obviously they are one shot and cannot be reused.

Tighten the two nuts against each other, then the one at the outside/end of the stud becomes the normal hex nut head for torquing up - use the inside nut when removing the stud, i.e. always turn the nut that will tighten against the other.
Once you're done, hold the end nut stationary and "tighten" the inner nut away from the stationary end one - it should not require much effort and by continuing to tighten the stud by using the inner nut it won't risk the stud being loosed. The torque required to separate the nuts should be much less than the initial stud torque.
